The California Lawyers Association Workers’ Compensation Section presented Clifford Sweet with the 2024 Lifetime Achievement Award in recognition of his legal expertise, professionalism, community service and considerable lifetime contributions to the workers’ compensation practice.
Sweet has been a Certified Specialist in Workers’ Compensation Law by the State Bar of California Board of Legal Specialization since 1981. Along with Terry Heggeness, Sweet formed and then managed for 40 years the workers’ compensation defense firm of Heggeness & Sweet. After withdrawing from his own firm in 2015, Sweet joined Pearlman, Brown & Wax where he has served in the advisory role Of Counsel. His expertise in workers’ compensation law includes related civil actions, appellate law and workers’ compensation fraud investigations. Sweet has assisted in writing important workers’ compensation legislation and regulations, including the Workers’ Compensation Fraud Act.
In 2005, Sweet was the first recipient of the Workers’ Compensation Defense Attorney of the Year Award from the Workers’ Compensation Section of the California State Bar Association (now the California Lawyers Association Workers’ Compensation Section).
