8:45 a.m. – 10:15 a.m.  PT –  Employment Legislative and Case Law Update

HR professionals will learn about California employment law trends and legislative developments that will impact employers in 2023. HR professionals will also learn about new laws and significant cases that will shape the employment law landscape in 2023.

10:30 a.m. – 11:15 a.m. PT –  Parenthood: Navigating Leaves of Absences, Benefits, and Beyond

HR professionals will be guided through applicable leaves of absences for employees entering parenthood. Benefits, wage replacement, and job security will be reviewed from the perspective of the mother, father, and guardians. HR professionals will walk through interactive process examples and hypotheticals.

11:15 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. PT –  How to Hire: Onboarding and Interviewing Potential Candidates

HR professionals will learn best practices to avoid discrimination claims when interviewing potential candidates. HR professionals will also learn best practices during the hiring process, including onboarding based on current employment laws. HR professionals will review guidelines to avoid pitfalls related to criminal history backgrounds and drug testing/use.

12:30 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. PT –  The Post-Pandemic Workforce-How COVID-19 Changed the Workplace, Management and Employee Priorities

HR professionals will review statistics, studies, and surveys on the impacts COVID-19 has had on the workplace. HR professionals will review real-life perspectives on successful takeaways and learn measures to reduce legal risk and employee attrition.

1:00 p.m. – 1:30 p.m. PT –  Costs to Litigate

HR professionals will review the hard and soft costs to litigate, including the cost-benefit analysis every employer must consider when faced with a lawsuit. A look at the potential for harsh verdicts for employers in California, particularly Los Angeles County. A snapshot of recent high damage awards in employment lawsuits, along with trends anticipated in 2023 with FEHA and wage-and-hour claims.

1:30 p.m. – 2:00 p.m. PT –  Wage and Hour Update

HR professionals will review how recent legal decisions have impacted payroll practices, class action and representative (PAGA) risk. HR professionals will learn how to identify and spot wage and hour exposure and methods to insulate their businesses.

2:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m. PT – Employment Litigation Trend Panel: A 360 Review of What Types of Cases We Are Seeing and Settling

HR professionals will learn the perspectives of a plaintiff’s employment attorney, a defense employment attorney, and a mediator on recent litigation trends and settlements. HR professionals will have the opportunity to participate in a Q&A session to better understand the trends and ways to avoid legal risk.

This year’s symposium will focus on the biggest issues affecting California employers through a variety of panel discussions led by PB&W attorneys and guest speakers.
